The Carpathia is little more than a footnote in Titanic’s story, but the heroism of her crew, specifically Captain Arthur Henry Rostron, was quite remarkable. Captain Rostron made an exceptional effort to sail his vessel urgently to the scene, bringing dangers to his own ship, it’s passengers & crew due to the prevalence of icebergs. Carpathia was the only vessel to save survivors, plucking 705 souls from certain death.
The two giant yellow cranes – Samson and Goliath – were constructed some 60 years after the Titanic, and today are the only remaining features of note of shipbuilding from the heyday of the 20th century. These two cranes tower above the former shipyard and are iconic landmarks of the city of Belfast. They each have protection status.
Elsewhere in the Titanic Quarter, using buildings and offices which in former days would have been part of shipyard activity, are housed the Belfast film studios. Much of the Northern Ireland content of the Game of Thrones cult series, and much more besides, is shot and edited here.
